well, what can we say. joe o’connell is simply one of our absolute favorite contemporary songwriters, and in our humble opinion is up there with some of the true greats. add to that his own unique sonic aesthetic which works equally well, and is equally recognizable, whether he’s serving up a lo-fi full band distortion fueled rock opus or an ultra-intimate simple & tender folk jewel. there's a unifying sweet deep melancholy that flows through these sounds like whiskey tinged blood through your veins, and after nearly ten years of releases joe has truly mastered his art... the songs are gorgeous & the sound is surprisingly hi-fi, lovingly recorded by justin vollmar & featuring many friends helping out in the studio. there’s certainly plenty of stripped-down hushed beauty ala ‘hindu windmills’ here, but the sound swells as friends join in, and hits more than a few rather rockin’ moments full of splashing drum kit, electric piano, layered harmonies, and of course that totally wicked cheap fuzz/reverb electric guitar sound joe can truly call his own... yet another little masterpiece in a long, highly impressive, and somehow largely overlooked discography...
